Kazan – is the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan, and one of the largest and most beautiful cities of Russia, which is on the list of UNESCO World Heritage cities.

Kazan is one of the leaders of the Russian cities by the number of nationalities and various world religions represented. Over the millennium history of the city of Kazan it has accumulated rich experience of different nationalities and religions living together, has reached interethnic harmony. About 1.2 million people – representatives of over 100 nationalities – live in Kazan in the atmosphere of cultural, religious and linguistic diversity. The religions balance is maintained by the respect for the rules of interfaith dialogue. These trends have caused a scientific interest in relevant projects, which are supported by government bodies: Kazan Spiritual Seminary, Russian Islamic University, Higher Muslim Madrasah Muhammadiya, higher Muslim Madrasah named after 1000 anniversary of adopting the Islam, various Sunday schools.

Development of modern culture specifically contributes into maintenance of inter-confessional relationships: creating conditions for the conservation and enhancement of religious values and heritage of different nationalities. Implementation of the law has improved moral climate strengthening cultural connections between East and West, which for several centuries has united Kazan. Evidencing that Kazan was recognized to be the best city of Russia in 2004 and became the All-Russian Public Prize “The Russian National Olympus” winner.

In 2005, Kazan celebrated the 1000th anniversary of its founding. The city gave itself heaps of presents and became a real tourism capital of Russia. In April 2009, the Russian Patent Office granted Kazan the right to brand itself as the “Third Capital” of Russia and also as the “Sports capital of Russia”. The city hosted the 2013 Summer Universiade, 2014 World Fencing Championships and the 2015 World Aquatics Championships, will host the 2017 World Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships, and the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Kazan has repeatedly hosted sports competitions of continental scale: the 2011 European Weightlifting Championships, the 2014 World Fencing Championships, the 16th FINA World Championships and 2017 is not an exception. The city will host the FIFA Confederations Cup. In addition to this, as it became known at the World Investment Forum, currently taking place in Sochi, Kazan will host the championship WorldSkills Russia in 2018. This is necessary to try out new sites that will be built for the world’s largest professional skills competition, WorldSkills in 2019.

The capital of Republic Tatarstan is a large railway, highway and airway knot, the largest river port on the Volga river. Kazan is one of the largest industrial and financial centers of Russia, and a leading city of the Volga economic region in construction and accumulated investment. Total banking capital of Kazan banks is third in Russia. Main branches of municipal industry are as follows: industrial engineering and metalwork, aircraft and instrumentation, chemical and petrochemical, light and food industry.An innovative economy is represented by the largest IT-park in Russia which is one of the largest of its kind among Eastern Europe science parks. Kazan ranks 174th (highest in Russia) in Mercer’s Worldwide Quality of Living Survey.

Kazan is a major scientific centre in Russia. Scientific discoveries are a subject of special pride. The city hosts RT Academy of Sciences and Kazan Scientific centre of RF Academy of Sciences, a network of research institutions.There are 44 institutes of higher education in Kazan, including 19 branches of universities from other cities. More than 140,000 students are educated in the city. Kazan Federal
University (founded in 1804) is third oldest university in Russia. In 2009 KFU got Federal status as main university of Volga Region.

Capital of Tatarstan refers to class “A” by its historical-cultural value and heritage preservation. The Kazan Kremlin, a unique complex of archeological, historical and architectural monuments enrolled into the UNESCO World Heritage list, is the main tourist attraction of Kazan. It is open for visits and tours on a daily basis. Tourists visiting the territory of the architectural conservation area will see such places of interest as the ‘falling’ Syuyumbike Tower, Savior Tower, Annunciation Cathedral and Kul-Sharif, one of the largest mosques in the world.

The thousand-year-old Kazan has a busy cultural life. The second large Grand Concert Hall in Russia, an opera, drama and a puppet theatres, a philharmonic hall, 4 state orchestras, song and dance ensemble of Republic Tatarstan represent high cultural traditions. There are 7 higher and secondary music and cultural institutions; over 50 music and art schools. Aside from classical art, the city facilitates the development of contemporary art trends as well. Such cultural events as the Feodor Chaliapin International Opera Festival, Rudolph Nureyev International Ballet Festival, White Lilac International Festival named after Sergey Rachmaninov, International Festival of Muslim Cinema and many others have already become annual for Kazan.
